FACELIFT FOR A REFUGEE CENTER
> Antwerp, Belgium > 2005
How to create privacy for multicultural users?
1. Asylum seekers felt exposed to the outside world by the 6 meter glass window. The social center administration wanted transparency to maintain healthy relations with the neighbourhood.
We made a white vinyl cut-out of a tree shadow builds a “natural” relation between indoor and outdoor. At the same time it creates a smooth layer of privacy.
2. The main room was a grey and anonymous place to which users felt no attachment but where they had to spend long hours.
A Batik workshop with African women gave inspiration for a wallpaper pattern and involved the users in the process - building communion between people and space.
